Honda’s Deal By the Numbers: 240,000 Electric Vehicles and 1,000 Union Jobs

Honda Motor Co. Ltd. Announces $15 Billion Investment in Canada’s First Comprehensive Electric Vehicle Supply Chain

A New Era for Canada’s Automotive Industry?

In a groundbreaking move, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. has announced plans to establish Canada’s first comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) supply chain in Alliston, Ontario. The massive project, valued at $15 billion, will see the Japanese automaker build four new manufacturing plants in Ontario, solidifying its position as a leader in the EV market.

Breaking Down the Numbers

$15 billion: Overall Cost of the Project

The large-scale project will involve the construction of several key components:

  1. Honda’s First Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant: A standalone plant that will produce up to 240,000 vehicles per year.
  2. Stand-Alone Battery Manufacturing Plant: A dedicated facility that will supply batteries for Honda’s EVs.
  3. CAM/pCAM Processing Facility: A joint venture with POSCO Future M Co. Ltd., a Korean battery materials company, to establish a CAM (cathode active material) and pCAM (positive cathode active material) processing plant.
  4. Separator Plant: A joint venture with Asahi Kasei Corp., a Japanese chemical company, to set up a separator plant.

Government Incentives

Honda is expected to receive significant government support for the project:

$5 billion: Value of Government Subsidies

The federal government and the province of Ontario are providing $2.5 billion in subsidies each. The federal government will offer 10% tax credits on building construction costs and 30% on new machinery and equipment, while the province will provide direct and indirect incentives.

Job Creation

The project is expected to create a substantial number of jobs:

1,000: Number of Total Jobs it Will Create

Honda currently employs over 4,200 people in Alliston and has a network of more than 280 dealerships across Canada. The new assembly plant and battery manufacturing facility will generate more than 1,000 unionized jobs during the construction phase. Additionally, many other positions will be created among Ontario’s leading auto parts suppliers and developers.

Vehicle Production Capacity

Once fully operational in 2028, the new assembly plant will be capable of producing up to 240,000 vehicles per year. Honda’s existing manufacturing facilities in Canada currently produce more than 400,000 vehicles and 190,000 engines annually.

Canada’s automotive sector contributes significantly to the country’s economy:

$18 billion: Contribution to GDP

The industry builds over 1.5 million vehicles each year, with one vehicle being produced every 21 seconds. The federal and provincial governments project that global EV sales will triple by 2030, making Canada well-positioned to be a major player in EV production.

Planning and Implementation

Planning for the new facilities is expected to be finalized within the next six months. At this point, Honda will release additional details regarding the project’s timeline, investment, and job creation.

A New Era for Canada’s Automotive Industry?

The establishment of Canada’s first comprehensive EV supply chain by Honda marks a significant milestone in the country’s automotive history. With its substantial investment, job creation, and production capacity, this project sets the stage for Canada to become a leading player in the global EV market.
