Wayve Secures $1 Billion in Funding to Provide Self-Driving Technology to Multiple Carmakers Including Those with Tesla-Like Capabilities

In a significant milestone for the autonomous driving industry, Wayve, a UK-based startup, has announced that it has raised $1.05 billion in Series C funding. This massive investment is led by SoftBank Group and marks the largest AI fundraise in the UK to date, ranking among the top 20 AI fundraises globally.

Participating Investors and Use of Funds

In addition to SoftBank Group, other notable participants in this round include Nvidia and existing investor Microsoft. Wayve’s early-stage investors also included Meta’s head of AI, Yann LeCun. The company plans to utilize the fresh capital injection to develop its product for ‘eyes on’ assisted driving and ‘eyes off’ fully automated driving, as well as other AI-assisted automotive applications.

Wayve’s End-to-End Self-Driving System

Founded in Cambridge in 2017, Wayve has been at the forefront of autonomous driving technology development. Unlike some competitors, Wayve’s approach is based on an end-to-end self-driving system, which learns to drive from raw sensor data. This innovative approach enables the company to create a more robust and adaptable autonomous driving solution.

Partnership with SoftBank Group

SoftBank Investment Advisers’ managing partner, Kentaro Matsui, who also serves as a Wayve board member, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in mobility: "AI is revolutionizing mobility… The potential of this type of technology is transformative; it could eliminate 99% of traffic accidents." With SoftBank Group’s backing, Wayve aims to redefine mobility and connectivity, contributing to a safer and more convenient society.

UK’s Position as an AI Superpower

This significant investment anchors the UK’s position as an AI superpower, solidifying its reputation as a hub for innovation and technological advancement. The UK has already made notable strides in the field of AI, with a strong ecosystem of startups, research institutions, and established companies driving progress.

Wayve’s Vision for Autonomous Driving

Wayve’s CEO emphasized the company’s commitment to making autonomous driving a reality: "We’re committed to making autonomous driving a safe, reliable, and efficient way to travel. With this funding, we’ll accelerate our development of end-to-end self-driving technology, which will enable vehicles to learn from raw sensor data and navigate complex environments."

Quote from UK Prime Minister

In a statement, the UK Prime Minister emphasized the significance of Wayve’s achievement: "This investment is a testament to the UK’s position as a global leader in AI and autonomous driving. We’re committed to supporting companies like Wayve, which are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with this technology."

Wayve’s Future Plans

With this record-breaking funding, Wayve aims to accelerate its development of end-to-end self-driving technology, paving the way for widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles. The company is poised to become a major player in the autonomous driving industry, revolutionizing the way we travel and transforming transportation as we know it.
